Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 Burnley Match Report

Spurs romped to victory at the weekend over a helpless Burnley side as Jose Mourinho’s side bounced back from the disappointing loss to Manchester United midweek. It was probably the most emphatic performance Spurs fans have seen under the current tenure of Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham Hotspur crashed back down to earth midweek having been beaten by Manchester United fairly convincingly at Old Trafford – a place where new head coach Jose Mourinho would’ve been desperate to right the wrongs of his former appointment there. It was the first loss that Spurs had suffered since they changed their head coach. Spurs fans wanted a reaction and boy did those Spurs players give them one at the peril of Sean Dyche’s side.

It’s pretty obvious what Spurs needed to do to weather the Burnley storm and Mourinho would’ve been well aware of that pre-match. Burnley, a physical yet effective side under the management of Sean Dyche have overachieved massively in the Premier League and have caused many a team problems with their combative style. Burnley play with two big men up top and they look to hit the channels every time with long balls which is why Mourinho may have opted with three centre backs in his back four to try and combat the long balls played by Burnley.

Harry Kane opened the scoring for Spurs in the early stages of the game with a trademark dipping long range effort that took the stuffing out of Burnley. Under Mourinho, Kane has dropped deeper and allowed Son and Alli to run in behind. A masterstroke by Jose. Not long after it was 2-0. Burnley were at sixes and sevens and Spurs finally look to be ruthless in front of goal and put teams to the sword. Lucas making it 2-0.

Then came the goal of the game we’re pretty convinced it’s the goal of the season – despite us being in December. Son picked the ball up on the edge of the Spurs 18 yard box, before advancing past six Burnley players before finishing past Pope with aplomb. We all knew how good Son can be but under Mourinho he really seems to have been galvanised.

It was good to see Harry Kane back amongst the goals too having scored twice. The second, a lovely driven shot into the top corner whilst being off balance in the area having just danced past two outstretched Burnley defenders.

Perhaps the most impressive feat since Mourinho’s appointment is Moussa Sissoko finding his shooting boots. He’s discovered a new lease of life and goal scoring form in this new system and it looks like Spurs are finally starting to get the best out of the powerful French midfielder. He scored his second goal in three games – having previously not scored for Spurs in the league since 2017.

Man of the Match – Harry Kane

We could’ve easily given the MOTM award to Son for the goal but Harry Kane’s overall play was mesmerising. The man could literally play anywhere on the pitch and still do a job. A complete Rolls Royce.

Jose’s Thoughts

“From the first minute you could immediately feel it, the boys were absolutely fantastic,” said Jose. “I don’t want a team to lose a game and to be depressed and sad, you need the reaction, you need that anger and today, from the first minute, everyone felt we were there.

“What can I say? It was an amazing performance in every detail of the game – the goals we scored, the quality of the football we played, the dominance, the defensive process, the clean sheet, the three kids coming off the bench, Troy’s debut in the Premier League, fans happy, amazing goals, both halves, an amazing performance.

“Sonny’s goal was incredible, the others as well, the combination for Moussa’s goal, the two shots from Harry, tremendous football. It could have been more, we were so, so good.”
