Spurs v Watford Premier League Preview

Spurs return to Premier League action on Wednesday against Watford knowing that a win is desperately needed at Wembley. Mauricio Pochettino’s team have lost their last two matches, both of which were in domestic cups, but it was the manner in which they lost to Crystal Palace last time out which makes a performance and a win against Watford all the more important.

The Hornets have been performing above expectations under manager Javi Gracia this season as they aim to finish in the European places. They are currently ninth in the Premier League table but a win could take them up to seventh place and have lost just one game in their past eight.

Watford also recorded an impressive victory over Newcastle in the fourth round of the FA Cup last weekend. Gracia made eleven changes to his team but they overcame the Magpies at St James’ Park, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Andre Gray and Isaac Success.

Spurs v Watford Team News

The big news for Spurs is that Heung-min Son and Moussa Sissoko are back available for selection. Sissoko has recovered from a minor injury sustained last week against Chelsea whereas Son has returned earlier than expected after his South Korea side were knocked out by Qatar in the Asian Cup.

The club have however confirmed that Ben Davies will remain sidelined with a groin injury whereas Harry Kane and Dele Alli will be out for at least the next month.

Watford are still without influential midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré with injury, however he has been linked with a big money move to PSG. Other than that, there are no more injury concerns for The Hornets with Gracia having somewhat of a selection headache given the excellent performances from some of his backup players in the FA Cup.

Spurs v Watford Predicted Team

Spurs Hospitality and Tickets

After sitting out the last two matches at the expense of Paulo Gazzaniga, Hugo Lloris will return to the Spurs starting lineup and will captain the side.

In front of him, Danny Rose is the only fit left back in the first team so will likely start unless Pochettino chooses to utilise Serge Aurier in that position. However the Ivory Coast international may well deputise for Kieran Trippier, given his poor performance against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup.

The Spurs centre back pairing is very likely to be Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld. Vertonghen was substituted at halftime in the last Spurs encounter whereas Alderweireld was rested completely, so both should be relatively fresh for the Premier League match against Watford.

Pochettino may revert back to a diamond midfield with the return of Sissoko. Both Harry Winks and Christian Eriksen were rested against Crystal Palace so will both return to the team, meaning it could be a midfield three of Eriksen, Sissoko, and Winks. In front of them, at the tip of the diamond, Erik Lamela could start after he was brought on at half time last time out.

In attack, it remains to be seen if Heung-min Son can go the full ninety minutes. If he is fully fit then he could be partnered by Lucas Moura up front with Fernando Llorente dropping to the bench.

What the Managers Said

Spurs Manager Mauricio Pochettino

“When you go back, I promise you we are a very successful group of people working for a company doing the job they need us to be doing. What can I say against the players because we lose on penalties to Chelsea. Why, for me they are heroes. Because we lose after three days when Crystal Palace had the whole week clear.”

“Tomorrow we are going to play a team that played Saturday, we played Sunday. Then we are going play Saturday, and then Sunday and Wednesday we are going to play against Borussia Dortmund. I am not going to complain, I am going to translate the reality, the fans want the reality. Then other people want to give their opinion from outside. I am a very positive person and I am going to try and deliver in my job. I am going to stick with the club until the end to help the club achieve all they want.” (Football.London)

Watford Manager Javi Gracia

“Believe me, it is not a problem. I am delighted with this. I am very pleased with all my players, especially Andre [Gray] and Isaac [Success], who scored in the last game. This is very, very good for the team to have different options. I trust all of them and they are waiting for their moment to show their level.” (BBC Sport)

Spurs v Watford One to Watch

Roberto Pereyra has scored six times for Watford in the Premier League and will be the player to watch out for at Wembley. Although he plays on the left hand side, the Argentine will operate as an inside forward, finding the space in between full back and centre back rather than playing as an out and out winger. It will be an interesting duel between him and whoever Mauricio Pochettino chooses to play on the right hand side of defence on Wednesday.

Spurs v Watford Match Stats

  • Watford won 2-1 at Vicarage Road earlier in the season and could complete a league double over Spurs for the first time
  • No more side in the Premier League has scored more headed goals this season than Spurs (12)
  • Spurs have gone 27 Premier League matches without a draw, Bolton hold the record with 28
  • Four of Troy Deeney’s five Premier League goals this campaign have been scored in away games

Spurs v Watford Referee

Graham Scott will be the man in the middle at Wembley on Wednesday. He has been officiating in the Premier League for the past five seasons and has took charge of Spurs and Watford once this season. He was last at Wembley when Spurs beat Burnley in December and was also referee when Watford lost 2-0 against Leicester, sending off former Spurs man Etienne Capoue.

Spurs v Watford Premier League Prediction

A response is needed from Spurs after a poor showing in their FA Cup match with Crystal Palace. The return of both Heung-min Son and Moussa Sissoko will be huge for Spurs and although Watford are doing very well lately, we think that Spurs will get back to winning ways.

Our prediction is Spurs 2-1 Watford
