Tottenham Hotspur vs Watford Match Preview

Premier League action is back and we can’t wait. As much as the international break gives players the chance to showcase their talent on the national stage and a chance to rediscover their form, it just doesn’t come close to club football and supporting the boys at the new stadium.

Spurs’ last game in the Premier League came against Brighton & Hove Albion and the less said about that, the better. It was a torrid afternoon for Tottenham Hotspur on the south-east coast as Brighton coasted to victory, beating Spurs by three goals to the good. To make things even worse for Spurs, Hugo Llrois suffered a dislocated elbow trying to save Neal Maupay’s shot that subsequently opened the scoring for Brighton, ruling the French World Cup Winner out for a long period of time. It was certainly an afternoon to forget for Spurs as their misery was compounded furthermore as Brighton scored two more to round off a truly miserable week.

Watford are struggling for form to and find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table and are the only club in the league to have not registered a win this season. Having sacked then-manager Javi Gracia and appointing now (and former) manager Quique Sanchez Flores, Watford haven’t been subject to the proverbial new manager bounce after they were beaten rather humiliatingly by current champions Manchester City 8-0 and couldn’t lay a glove on Wolves and were defeated 2-0. Favourites to head into Christmas at the bottom of the league, Watford will be desperate to try and change their fortunes against a Spurs side that has been highly inconsistent this season. Last season’s star performers such as Deulofeu and Doucoure have failed to recreate their form of last season which saw The Hornets reach an FA Cup Final – only to be beaten heavily by Manchester City. Quite the pattern. Club captain Troy Deeney has been missing this season and he’s a presence that Watford have really missed but will continue to be side-lined.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Watford is a 3 pm kick-off.

Team News

Hugo Lloris will miss this fixture due to the dislocated elbow injury he suffered against Brighton so Paulo Gazzaniga will start in goal for Spurs. The re-signing of Michel Vorm means he should feature on the bench as a bit of goalkeeping back up for Spurs. Ryan Sessegnon is still doubtful with a hamstring injury, alongside Giovani Lo Celso who’s out with a groin injury. Anyone could start for Spurs in the advanced positions with Kane the only offensive player who’s guaranteed a start.

Watford are without Troy Deeney and Isaac Success but apart from that, they have a clean bill of health leading into this game.

Last Time They Met

Spurs v Watford was last played in January 2019 where Spurs won 2-1. Late goals from Son Heung-min and then Fernando Llorente meant Spurs won all three points against an in-form Watford team. Spurs had lost their two previous home games. Spurs’ record vs Watford stands at 31 wins, 9 draws and 8 losses.

Eric Dier’s Thoughts

“It’s never nice going into an international break on that note and having to wait this long.

“At the same time, it gives you time to settle and put your emotions in the right place. Hopefully, that’s what we’ll do, and we can all push through this as a Club. We need everyone – players, staff, fans – to stand up and push through this.

“For me, the main thing is we’ve been working altogether – okay, some people have gone, some people have come in – but working all together over the last five years to get to the point where this is the conversation when you lose two games on the trot.

“We’ve wanted to get to the point where we are considered a team that if you lose two games like that, you come in for a lot of criticism. Now, we have to embrace the situation.”

How We See It

Spurs can’t afford to slip up in this one against bottom of the league Watford so we fancy Spurs to bounce back and win the game 3-0.
