Tottenham Hotspur v Bayern Munich Match Preview

Champions League football returns this week as Spurs face five-time winners Bayern Munich in the first European fixture of the season at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs drew 2-2 in their first Champions League Group B game against Olympiacos after leading in the game by two goals. Bayern Munich ran out 3-0 winners in their first game against Red Star Belgrade and currently top the group.

Both clubs have struggled to really get going and execute the European form that their fans are used to seeing – especially with Bayern completing dominating German football for as long as we can remember.

Spurs beat Southampton at the weekend but it wasn’t as convincing as they’d have wished with some fans claiming it simply papered over the cracks. Mauricio Pochettino will be desperate to get back on track and dispel all of the questions surrounding Spurs’ performances.

Similarly to Spurs, Bayern Munich also won at the weekend but it was far from convincing as they narrowly beat Paderbon 3-2. Bayern continue to dominate the German leagues as they are unbeaten in eight since their German Super Cup game and have scored a handsome amount of goals along the way. It’s been all change for the five-time winners with club icons Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben leaving the club in the summer but they’ve strengthened in bringing in Barcelona’s Phillippe Coutinho and Benajmin Pavard.

Just like Spurs, they have a world class striker in Robert Lewandowski who’s netted twelve times already this season and is a constant threat in front of goal – even at the age of 31.

Bayern haven’t won the Champions League since 2013 which is far too long for a club of its stature. Bayern are unbeaten in their last eight out of nine away matches in Europe but have only won one in five on English soil – something that bodes well for Spurs but it’s something that Bayern will want to correct. Tottenham Hotspur v Bayern Munich is a 20:00 kick off.

Team News

Giovani Lo Celso still remains injured for Spurs alongside Ryan Sessegnon who has yet to feature for the club. Pochettino isn’t short of attacking options with Lamela, Son, Dele Alli and Lucas Moura all fighting for their place in the team. Son did pick up a knock against Southampton but he appears to be okay for this match.

Bayern are without Leon Gortezka which will be a major blow for the Germans whilst new signing Ivan Perisic missed the match at the weekend through illness so he’s also a doubt. David Alaba was back on the bench at the weekend too so he could feature.

The Last Time They Met

The pair met during pre-season in the Audi Cup where Spurs were victorious on penalties having drawn the game 2-2 at the Allianz arena. You have to go back to 1983 to find the last time Bayern and Spurs played each other competitively. The UEFA cup game saw Spurs win 2-0 with goals from Steve Archibald and Mark Falco. Spurs’ record against Bayern Munich stands at won one, drawn one and lost two.

Poch’s Thoughts

“We all expect a very tough game. Bayern Munich are a great team, a great club, amazing players, great manager. It will be an exciting game. This is a moment to enjoy the possibility of playing Champions League football against one of the best teams in Europe.”

“I’m so excited because when you are in football as a player or a manager you want to be involved in this type of game and a competition like the Champions League, playing against teams like Bayern Munich. This is a club that every season prepares to try to win the Champions League, their history says that. For sure, they are one of the contenders.”

“We hope to win tomorrow and to be in a better position than last season. Last season after three games we only had one point, no-one believed in us and after that, we reached the final of the Champions League. You need to be calm, to be strong in your mentality.”
