Match Preview – Spurs vs Man City

Tottenham Hotspur play host to prospective champions Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening.

City have had a rough week or so, losing twice to Liverpool in the Champions League and losing 3-2 to rivals Manchester United in the Premier League. It has been three years since Man City have lost three games on the bounce, and they will no doubt be looking to rectify their winning ways. They need six points to win the league.

Whilst City are experiencing their first bad spell of the 2017/18 season, Spurs are soaring as the only Premier League side not to have lost in 2018. If they manage to win or draw with Man City on the weekend, Spurs will set a new club record of 15-games unbeaten in the Premier League.

The last time Spurs lost in the league was actually to Man City in the reverse fixture earlier in the year. City comfortably beat Spurs at the Etihad 4 goals to 1, where Christian Eriksen was the lone scorer for Tottenham Hotspur. You can read the match report for that fixture here.

Injury and Team News

Kieran Trippier has been a favourite of Pochettino’s this season, but all those starts are starting to take their toll. Trippier is being monitored for his fitness this week as he is struggling with fatigue, it is likely we will see a consecutive start from Serge Aurier in the RB position. Harry Winks has unfortunately been ruled out for the rest of the season, so Pochettino doesn’t really have any other injury concerns: it’s a squad at relatively full fitness.

For Manchester City, John Stones still seems to be suffering from a groin injury and therefore is unlikely to make an appearance in this fixture. Benjamin Mendy continues his recovery process on his knee, so will be absent from this match.

Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho begins his two-match ban this week as a result of accruing 10 yellow cards over the course of the season.

Form

Manchester City are playing off a loss against their rivals in the Premier League but are still 13 points clear at the top of the table. They will win the League that is a given, but they need 6 points to mathematically clinch it. City have lost four of their last six matches.

Spurs are 4th in the league with 67 points – 10 points adrift of Chelsea in 5th. It seems unlikely that they will stumble up from this position and miss out on Champions League qualification for next season. The race for second position seems to be heating up. Liverpool, in 3rd place, also have 67 points – and Spurs have a game in hand. Manchester United are 4 points ahead of Spurs on 71. Whatever order, it seems like these four will be the final four at the end of the season.

The match will kick off at 7.45pm on Saturday 14th April 2018. This fixture will be televised by Sky Sports.

Spurs vs Man City: Our Prediction

If you asked me a week ago I would have definitely gone with a Manchester City win. But Man City look tired. They look fatigued towards the end of their recent games and they have got sloppy. Spurs, on the other hand, do not. I think Man City will get the first goal, perhaps in the first 30 minutes. However, Spurs look hungry at the moment and Pochettino has them running like a well-oiled machine, I can’t see them failing to score in the second half, especially since Harry Kane is hunting down Mo Salah’s 29 goals.

We predict the score will be: Man City 1:2 Tottenham Hotspur
