Harry Kane can silence his critics against the ‘Toon’

Harry Kane has been the subject of scrutiny for a few weeks now following his speedy return to action after suffering another ankle injury. Despite scoring three goals since his return, the frontman hasn’t been as clinical or decisive as he has been all season.

The latest tirade against Kane has surfaced following an underwhelming performance against recently-relegated West Bromwich Albion. West Brom have thrived despite descending into the UK’s second-best league, but Harry Kane seemed sluggish when presented with opportunities in front of goal.

It’s not that Kane is not scoring – he bagged against Watford just last week. It’s the difference between getting that extra yard space, battling for that 50/50, taking just one more shot, and not doing all of the above.

Adam Bate writes that Kane’s top speed until his injury was 31.57 km/h and after, 29.07 km/h. He adds that his average shots per game have decreased from 6.06 per 90 minutes to 3.338 per 90 minutes. Harry Kane has had 178 attempts on goal this season. One integral component to his success is his sheer determination to shoot and to fight for every yard he can find. It’s that sharpness that is yet to return.

If anything, it’s a credit to the man’s natural talent: he can still score three in five Premier League games even when he is clearly not 100% fit.
Jermain Defoe has recently testified on behalf of Kane’s intrinsic qualities as a striker by stating that,

“You don’t need to be fit – if you’re a goal scorer, you’re a goal scorer… Harry’s one of those players who even if he’s not 100% wants to play and score goals”

Harry Kane has proven himself after injury recoveries before, and he has been gifted a chance to win back the few that have spoken against him tonight against Newcastle. The Magpies are 10th, safe, on a three-match losing streak and have little to play for in terms of climbing the table.

Harry Kane must rise to the occasion

Spurs need four points to secure Champions League football and six points for a chance to secure third place. Equally, Chelsea may just usurp Spurs if Pochettino’s picks go up in flames. It is a huge game and Harry Kane has the opportunity to play the hero again. He has claimed in the media recently that he is feeling sharp. Unfortunately, his last two games, against Watford and WBA, have proved otherwise.
But these recent performances give Harry game time, which as Defoe testifies, is the best remedy for overcoming a physical injury.

No one can doubt his desire, dedication, and mental strength: these personal qualities are what led to the decision to return the pitch with haste. But it is these qualities that define his make-up, the DNA that runs through his body which screams to be the best he can be. Tonight could be the night. Let’s see a return of the HurraKane which took North London by storm in seasons gone by.
