Spurs head to Stamford Bridge for the second time this season hoping to put the disappointing resulting against Burnley behind them with a win against their London rivals. The Blues also had a difficult weekend after losing out on penalties to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.
Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping for an immediate reaction from his players when they face Chelsea after returning from Turf Moor with no points. Goals from Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes halted Spurs’ winning run in the league and to make matters worse Pochettino will receive punishment from the FA for his outburst towards referee Mike Dean.
The home side held Manchester City to a goalless draw after extra time at the weekend but lost out on penalties after misses from Jorginho and David Luiz. The game was overshadowed by the actions of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who refused to be subbed when down with cramp in the latter stages of the match.
The bizarre circumstances at Wembley perhaps overshadowed a good performance from Chelsea but, equally, manager Maurizio Sarri has been under increasing pressure because of the poor performances of late from his team. Chelsea have lost three of their last four league games so defeat against Spurs would see the team and manager come under increasing pressure.
Goals from Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Harry Kane gave Spurs the victory in the reverse fixture at Wembley and they will be hoping for a repeat of the scoreline at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea v Spurs Team News
🔹 @dele_official (hamstring) – continuing with onfield rehab and progressing well.
— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) February 26, 2019
Spurs have confirmed that Eric Dier will miss out with tonsillitis whereas Dele Alli is continuing his rehabilitation. Kieran Trippier and Davinson Sanchez are also expected to make a return after being rested against Burnley with the matches against Chelsea and Arsenal in mind.
For Chelsea, Willy Caballero is in contention to start after the antics of record signing Arrizabalaga at the weekend but Sarri has not confirmed whether he will drop his number one. Gary Cahill and Davide Zappacosta are both doubts but neither were likely to play a major part anyway.
Callum Hudson-Odoi and Gonzalo Higuain are in contention to start after coming off the bench on Sunday whereas Marcos Alonso could replace Emerson at left back.
Chelsea v Spurs Predicted Team
What Mauricio Pochettino Said
“After a defeat, you are frustrated and disappointed and you feel the exercise to move on in your mind is there. After Sunday and today and yesterday, we used these training sessions to move on, to try and sync in tomorrow and forget the game against Burnley. At the same time it is so important to remember what happened against Burnley because of course, it is going to be a different game against Chelsea, but it is so important that you need to give you best and at some point in certain areas you need to be available to improve when you play with different styles.”
“We didn’t against Burnley, we were not willing to fight in the same way and that is why we lost. If you are much, much, much better in possession and you make the difference in that way of course, but we weren’t capable to match them in that situation. In possession with the ball, we didn’t impose our quality. That is why we feel so disappointed because we didn’t create enough. OK, we created more than them but not enough to win the game because if you concede two goals you have to score three and we were not capable to do that.”
Chelsea v Spurs Prediction
Spurs have shown this season that they are capable of bouncing back after disappointing results and we think they will do the same at Stamford Bridge. Although they performed well against Manchester City, Chelsea have not been in good form lately so Spurs will be looking to take advantage of that.
It will be a physical game and a tough battle for both sides, but Harry Kane could be the difference up front for Spurs. Our prediction is Chelsea 1-2 Spurs.
