Spurs travel to the Cardiff City Stadium on New Year’s Day hoping to put their disappointing defeat against Wolves in their last encounter behind them. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are still third in the table and look on course to finish in the top four but will be disappointed with the setback against Wolves particularly as Manchester City have also struggled of late.
The Wolves result was the first time in twenty-eight matches that Spurs had lost to a newly promoted team in the Premier League and a victory against Cardiff is paramount if Spurs want to keep up with Liverpool at the top of the table.
Spurs are also fighting on all four fronts this season and have a big match versus Manchester United coming up, sandwiched in between the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final with Chelsea. Pochettino will be very eager to keep the momentum going into those games having been on such a good run of form throughout the end of November and December.
Meanwhile Cardiff have picked up four points in their last two matches against Leicester and Crystal Palace. Victor Camarasa scored a screamer against the Foxes to give Neil Warnock’s team their first away win in the Premier League this season. Because of that, they are now three points ahead of the relegation zone. Although they will want to get the most they can from the Spurs match, the real test for them will be picking points up against their fellow relegation rivals later in the month.
Cardiff v Spurs Team News
It is likely that Pochettino will rotate ahead of the Cardiff game given the poor showing against Wolves. Danny Rose and Kyle-Walker Peters could come in at full back but the central defence is expected to remain the same.
Other than that, the team could remain the same with the exception of Lucas Moura who will be itching for a start after being on the bench against Wolves. There’s a chance that Pochettino will give the same players that lost last time out a chance to redeem themselves against Cardiff on New Year’s Day.
For Cardiff, Callum Paterson will continue to lead the line against Spurs with Kenneth Zohore still out with a thigh injury. Neil Warnock could also make changes out wide for Cardiff with Bobby Reid, Junior Hoilett and Josh Murphy all vying for a start.
Former Aston Villa left back Joe Bennett, who started the season as Cardiff’s first choice, may also be recalled in the place of Greg Cunningham.
