Micky Van de Ven closing in on a move to Spurs?
The Dutch defender looks set to leave Wolfsburg in favour of a move to THFC this summer
Spurs are having a busy summer transfer window. Ange Postecoglu looks set to add Wolfsburg central defender Micky Van De Ven to his Tottenham Hotspur squad ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season. According to the MailOnline, the fee is reported to be £30 million, with the 22-year-old Dutch defender looking set to sign a five year contract with the Lilywhites.
Van de Ven’s professional career began with FC Volendam, where he started playing for their under-19 team back in 2018, playing in the preliminary round of the U19 Eredivisie. He made 12 appearances, providing one assist in a season which saw his team finish in 13th place, dropping down to the U19 Eerste Divisie, where they finished 10th.
After promising performances for the U-19 side, Van de Ven was promoted to the Under 21 squad ahead of the 2019/20 season. Van de Ven made six appearances in the Tweede Divisie (Dutch Third Tier). The defender also made his first appearances for the senior team that year, making 19 appearances in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie (Dutch Second Tier), where promotion was not achieved after the season was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Van de Ven remained a regular starter for FC Volendam, making 26 appearances in the Dutch Second Tier, helping his team to a 6th place finish with 66 points. The Dutchman contributed two goals and an assist that season. His impressive performances for Volendam were now making waves on the continent, and Van de Ven chose to make a move to German Bundesliga outfit VFL Wolfsburg ahead of the 2021/22 season for a fee in the region of €3.5m (£2.9m).
He was not a regular starter in his first season at the club, making eight appearances in all competitions, with his team finishing 12th in the league with 42 points. Van de Ven then established himself as a regular starter for Die Wölfe (The Wolves) last season (2022/23), making 36 appearances in all competitions, with 33 coming in the league.
Van De Ven helped the club to an 8th place finish with 49 points, whilst he was also part of the team to reach the round Of 16 of the DFB Pokal, where they lost 2-1 to Union Berlin. Top clubs across Europe took notice of the Dutchman’s performances for Wolfsburg, and his fast recovery pace and ability in the tackle make him an attractive option for many clubs across the continent.
Micky Van De Ven has yet to make his debut for the Senior Netherlands National Team, but he does have 11 caps for the U21 side. At 22 years old, the Dutchman is already showing that he is a very capable defender who looks ready to adapt quickly to Premier League football. His age also means he can only get better – this would be an excellent signing for Tottenham now and in the future.
