Match Preview: Watford vs Spurs – Premier League

Tottenham travel to face Watford in the Premier League on Sunday. With both sides riding high on three victories on the trot, and an attack minded squad at both ends, there should be plenty of goals. Both teams are sitting joint equal with Liverpool and Chelsea at the top of the table – the first time in Watford’s top-flight history – so the competition is sure to be even fiercer.

Watford have a number of danger men. Troy Deeney, striker and captain, may not be prolific but he is a clever footballer who pulls the side together and leads from the front. Watford’s Jose Holebas, who’s cross-cum-shot found the top corner in a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace, will have to be watched, as will front man Roberto Pereyra. Against Palace, Pereyra notched his third goal in as many games for the Hornets.

But Spurs will go to Vicarage Road full of confidence after producing a fantastic performance in beating Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Andre Marriner will take charge of the Watford game. Marriner officiated four of Spurs’ Premier League matches last season and they won all of them, defeating Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea in the process.

Fast forward to this season and at United, Christian Eriksen – who has a transfer market value of £72 million – played a key part linking the midfield to the attack, while Toby Alderweireld was immense at the heart of defence. Kieran Trippier has continued his World Cup form and Harry Kane is back to his best. But it was January signing Lucas Moura who stood out.

Watford vs Spurs: Predicted Lineup

Watford vs Spurs Predicted Lineup

Kane, Dele Alli and Moura complement each other – Kane so clinical, Alli so astute, and Moura with pace to burn. The former Paris Saint-Germain forward had a tentative start at Spurs, but is now on song. Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen is certainly convinced by the 26-year-old Brazilian, saying following his step into the limelight;

“We line up against him every day in training and he’s just a nightmare to play against.He works hard, he has goals in him – left foot, right foot – and so much pace. He’s a great player. Obviously, he missed pre-season last year and that’s very important to understand the style of play and having the fitness to cope with what the attackers have to do because they run so much. He had a great pre-season this time from what I’ve heard. He’s an unbelievable guy, everyone in the dressing room is so happy for him. I think you could see that. Everyone was hugging him. He had a couple of tough years in Paris and last year he didn’t play as much as he wanted. This year, he’s here and he’s an unbelievable player.” (TalkSport)

With Heung-min Son currently on duty with South Korea at the Asian Games, Moura has become an important member of Mauricio Pochettino’s side, saying after the Man United victory that;

“My objective is to win a trophy and make history here and I believe we can do that because we have a very good team, very good structure and very good fans so just need to believe and work. I feel so comfortable here now. I am so happy with my new life, with my new – my house, my club, my team-mates – so I want to stay here for a long time.” (SkySports)

With the team on such good form, its sure to be a thrilling encounter. Watford beware!
