Match Preview – Manchester United vs Spurs

This weekend, Man Utd will come head to head with Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final – where both teams will be desperately looking to get their hands on some silverware.

Spurs will have been disappointed with their midweek draw away at Brighton. The top-four finish seemed all but sealed for Spurs when they smashed Chelsea 3-1 away, however doubts have started to creep in following a fatigued performance on Tuesday. Man Utd, following a shock defeat to West Brom, will be playing off the back of a 2-0 win against Bournemouth.

With Manchester City claiming both the Premier League and the Carabao Cup for themselves, Liverpool competing for the Champions League, and Arsenal for the Europa League, Jose Mourinho and Mauricio Pochettino will seek to capitalise on the chance to take the last available trophy back to their respective clubs.

Manchester United have won 89 of the matches where these two sides have come head to head. Spurs have won 51 times, and the teams have drawn 48 times. The last time they met, Spurs edged Man Utd 2-0 at Wembley Stadium in January. Christian Eriksen scored the first goal within 11 seconds, and Phil Jones scored an own goal to seal the win. Injury and Team News

Jose Mourinho made seven changes midweek, giving various players a chance to impress on the field. Romelu Lukaku was benched against Bournemouth and therefore will probably start against Spurs. We should see the re-entrance of Nemanja Matic in the middle.  Alexis anchez is another one that was dropped from the starting XI – it would be assumed that he is going to start on the weekend, but his recent form has been less than satisfactory.

For Spurs, Pochettino decided to play Toby Alderweireld for the full 90 minutes against Brighton – his first sniff of Premier League action since the end of 2017. The intention was to rest Davinson Sanchez, who will most likely appear alongside Jan Vertonghen. Kyle Walker-Peters and Danny Rose will be hoping for some involvement within the squad, perhaps appearing on the bench. Harry Winks has been ruled out until the end of the season. After Serge Aurier gifted Brighton with a penalty on Tuesday, Kieran Trippier will most likely return as Right-Back.

Manchester United are 2nd in the Premier League with 74 points. They have beaten Yeovil Town, Huddersfield and Brighton to get to the semi-final.

Spurs are two places beneath Utd in the league with 70 points. Finishing as high as they can in the league will remain a priority for Tottenham Hotspur; they are currently 8 points ahead of Chelsea in 5th. Pochettino has in fact publicly stressed his preference over a higher league finish, rather than an FA Cup victory.

Tottenham Hotspur defeated AFC Wimbledon, Rochdale and Swansea City to reach the FA Cup semi-final.

Manchester United vs Spurs: Our Prediction

Anything can happen when it comes to cup matches. Both teams have had disappointing results really, but winning silverware should mean a lot to both sets of players, not to mention the teams. Were going to go with 2-1 to Spurs.
