Manchester City v Spurs Match Preview

Giovani Lo Celso goal v Villa

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have the opportunity to move back into the top four with a win against the reigning Premier League Champions at the Etihad.

Following disappointing defeats against Aston Villa and Chelsea, Tottenham will look to bounce back with what would be a statement victory against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium. Ange Postecoglou’s side will be facing a Cityzens side who are seeking a historic fourth consecutive Premier League title this term.

As mentioned, a win against City would be a statement victory, and Spurs have had some statement wins in the league so far in the 2023/24 season. Such results include their comfortable 2 – 0 success against Manchester United and their 2 – 1 victory against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in late September.

Tottenham did spend time at the top of the Premier League table after remaining unbeaten for the first ten Premier League matches. This incredible run of form saw them beat Burnley 5 – 2, Fulham 2 – 0, Crystal Palace 2 – 1, and they also earned a very creditable 2 – 2 with North London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

After playing 13 matches, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur currently sit 5th in the Premier League table with 26 points accumulated by the Lilywhites at the time of writing.

We will now move on to Tottenham’s latest Premier League match, which is, of course, set to see them face second place Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. The game will be kicking off at 16:30 on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs’ most recent encounter with City came in the league on Sunday, 5th February 2023, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was a 1 – 0 win for the home side thanks to a goal from Harry Kane (15’), which saw him become the North London Club’s all-time leading goal scorer. This broke a decades old record set by Lilywhites legend Jimmy Greaves.

In recent times, Tottenham have a good record against their Manchester counterparts – in their last four meetings in all competitions, Spurs have won three and lost just one of these matches (this includes their most recent win in February).

The other two wins came in August 2021 and February 2022. For the game in 2021, Spurs won 1 – 0, where Son Heung-Min scored the winning goal in the early stages of the second half (55’). As for the second win in February 2022, this was a 3 – 2 success for the Lilywhites at the Etihad Stadium. Two goals from Harry Kane (59’, 90’) and a goal from Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski (4’) got them the win in Manchester.

Overall, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have come face to face no fewer than 168 times as of the time of writing, including their first ever encounter on 16th January 1909, which saw Spurs win 4 – 3 away from home.

Both clubs have 66 wins each, with there being a total of 36 draws between them as of the time of writing.

Excitement and anticipation is building ahead of this blockbuster clash between second and fifth place in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. If Tottenham win, they could rise as high as second place should other results go their way. Victory could also see them extend their lead on 6th place Manchester United should the Red Devils lose their match against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

Following this game against Manchester City, Spurs will now be playing two home Premier League matches in a row. The first is against David Moyes’ West Ham United in a 20:15 kick-off on Thursday 7th December.

Newcastle United, led by Head Coach Eddie Howe, will visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for their Premier League match against Spurs on Sunday, 10th December 2023, in a 16:30 kick-off.

There is no better way to watch Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than with an Eventmasters VIP Hospitality Package. Book now to avoid disappointment.
