Manchester City 3 – 3 Spurs Match Review
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham gained another vital point in the race for the Champions League against the reigning Premier League Champions Manchester City on Sunday.
Sunday saw two Premier League heavyweights go head to head when Manchester City met Spurs at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League. Confidence was high for the North London club, as they had three wins in their last four matches against Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of this match.
Before the match, Tottenham sat in fifth place with 26 points, with only 2 separating themselves and Aston Villa in fourth and Liverpool in third place. As for City, they were in second place before the game with 29 points which meant that they were just a single point adrift of league leaders Arsenal at the summit.
Throughout their tremendous start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, the Lilywhites have enjoyed some fantastic victories, including their 2 – 0 win against Manchester United, their 2 – 1 win against Liverpool and their emphatic 5 – 2 win against Burnley at Turf Moor.
They also earned a creditable 2 – 2 draw in the North London Derby at the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal. Son Heung-Min scored both of Tottenham Hotspur’s goals either side of half time on the day (42’, 55’).
This was yet another memorable match to have been played this season, with it being an enthralling 3 – 3 draw between two heavyweights of English football. We will now move on to reviewing the game itself.
It was a busy opening ten minutes. Son Heung-Min scored the opening goal for Tottenham (6’) before he was unfortunate to score an own goal to restore parity in the game just a few moments later (9’).
Ange Postecoglou’s side fell behind just after half an hour when Phil Foden completed the turnaround for City to make it 2 – 1 after he managed to find the bottom left corner from close range (31’). The home side went on to lead at the half time break.
Both clubs had opportunities to add to the score line in the second half, but it was not until just over twenty minutes of the contest remaining that one of the teams found the net. Giovani Lo Celso scored his second goal in as many games to restore parity for the visitors (69’).
Then, with just less than ten minutes to go, Manchester City looked to have scored the winning goal when Jack Grealish found the bottom left corner with aplomb after receiving the ball from Erling Haaland in the Lilywhites’ penalty area (81’). 3 – 2.
There was to be even more drama in an incredible game of Premier League football. There was a third equaliser when Sweden international forward Dejan Kulusevski found the top left corner with a superb header following a cross into the box from 2023 summer signing Brennan Johnson (90’).
No further opportunities came for either side, so each side got a point in a thrilling 3 – 3 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
Possession was almost even, with Manchester City having slightly more with 55% compared to Spurs’ 45%. Both teams had equal shots on target, with no less than 4 each.
This draw leaves Spurs in 5th place, but they are still only 2 points off Aston Villa in fourth place. As for City, they have dropped to third place after Liverpool’s win against Fulham.
Tottenham’s next game will see them face West Ham United at home (20:15 Kick-Off) before facing Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium a week after facing the Hammers on Sunday 10th December 2023 (16:30 Kick-Off).
