Liverpool v Spurs Preview

Spurs v Liverpool

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur look to get back on track in the Premier League with all three points against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs are still in the hunt for UEFA Champions League qualification via the Premier League come the end of the 2023/24 season. Following the game against Chelsea in midweek, Ange Postecoglou’s side are set to travel to Anfield for a vital game against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Three points for Tottenham on the Red side of Stanley Park would see them go to within just four points of fourth placed Aston Villa – and with a game in hand to boot if results go their way. We are now entering the final stages of the battle for the final spot in the top four, with the conclusion of the current season a matter of weeks away.

At the time of writing, Postecoglou’s Lilywhites currently find themselves in 5th place after accumulating a total of 60 points from their 34 matches to date. Their Champions League Qualification rivals in the form of Unai Emery’s Villa currently have a 7 point lead on their North London counterparts. Spurs can of course bridge this gap, and they will need to start here against Klopp’s Reds with only 3 games left after this.

Spurs’ most recent game was against Chelsea on Thursday night, where they were on the wrong end of a narrow 2 – 0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. The most recent win for the club in the Premier League came against Nottingham Forest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April.

It was an emphatic 3 – 1 victory for Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites, with their goals coming courtesy of Micky van de Ven (52’), Pedro Porro (58’), and an own goal from Forest’s Brazilian central defender Murillo (15’).

Moving on to Liverpool, their most recent game was against David Moyes’ West Ham United at the Hammers’ London Stadium. It was to be a 2 – 2 draw in East London for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds side who scored through Andy Robertson (48’) and an own goal from West Ham Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola (65’). Jarrod Bowen (43’) and Michail Antonio (77’) scored the goals for Moyes’ home side that day.

The most recent victory for the Reds was in a Premier League game at Craven Cottage against a Marco Silva led Fulham side, which was won 3 – 1 by Liverpool. Trent Alexander-Arnold (32’), Ryan Gravenberch (53’) and Diogo Jota (72’) were all on the scoresheet for the away side.

Overall, there have been a total of 182 competitive matches played between them over the years to date, and it is Liverpool with a superior record of 89 wins in this fixture in all competitions compared to Tottenham’s total of 49. There have been as many as 44 draws between them as well to date.

It was Spurs who won the very first competitive encounter between these two English Heavyweights in what was a league game back on 13th November 1909. The game itself was played at the iconic White Hart Lane in front of a 25,000 strong crowd, and it was a goal from winger Herbert Middlemiss that handed his team the win.

The most recent match to have been played between these two Premier League giants came earlier on in the 2023/24 campaign. It was played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 30th September 2023 in-front of a 62,001 strong crowd in North London. It was an impressive 2 – 1 win on the day for Ange Postecoglou’s side who found the net thanks to Son Heung-Min (36’) and an own goal from Reds central defender Joel Matip (90+6’).

Excitement and anticipation are building rapidly ahead of what is set to be a crucial game in the Premier League between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday 5th May 2024 in a 16:30 kick-off.
