Leicester City v Spurs Match Preview
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham are set to face newly promoted Leicester City in their opening fixture of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
Excitement is building amongst Spurs fans for the start of their 2024/25 Premier League campaign, and they are set to get their season underway with a trip to the King Power Stadium to face newly promoted Leicester City, led by Head Coach Steve Cooper. Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham side are set to take on the Foxes on Monday 19th August 2024 in what is a 20:00 kick off.
This season, the Lilywhites harbour ambitions of obtaining a top four finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League. Fans are also excited about potential European Glory in the UEFA Europa League, and Tottenham will be among the favourites to win this competition.
As for Leicester, they managed to seal an instant return to the Premier League after winning the title under the stewardship of now Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who led them to a grand total of 97 points. Now with former Nottingham Forest Head Coach Steve Cooper in charge, the Foxes will be hoping to retain their Premier League status by avoiding relegation this season.
Ahead of the new season, Tottenham have signed a number of players. The players that have sealed a move to North London so far this summer are as follows: Timo Werner (Loan with option to buy, From RB Leipzig), Yang Min-hyeok (From Gangwon FC), Lucas Bergvall (From Djurgardens), Wilson Odobert (From Burnley), Archie Gray (From Leeds United), and finally Dominic Solanke (From Bournemouth).
Leicester City has also recruited several players this summer, ahead of their imminent return to the Premier League. They have signed the following players: Facundo Buonanotte (Loan, Brighton), Bobby De Cordova-Reid (From Fulham), Michael Golding (From Chelsea), Caleb Okoli (From Atalanta), and Issahaku Fatawu (From Sporting CP).
The last time that these two clubs met in the Premier League was back in the 2022/23 season when they met in a match at the King Power Stadium on 11th December 2023. It was a 4 – 1 defeat for Spurs, with Nampalys Mendy (23’), James Maddison (25’), Kelechi Iheanacho (45’), and Harvey Barnes (81’) on the scoresheet, whilst it was Rodrigo Bentancur who found the back of the net for Spurs’ only goal of the game early on in the first half (14’).
Tottenham Hotspur did however win the other game that they played against each other in the top flight that season, beating the Foxes emphatically by a margin of 6 – 2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Harry Kane (8’), Eric Dier (22’), Rodrigo Bentancur (47’), and Son Heung-Min (73’, 84’, 86’) were all on target for Spurs in that game. Youri Tielemans (6’ – Penalty) and James Maddison (41’) were both of the players on target for the Foxes in that game.
Overall, these two clubs have gone head to head in a competitive fixture on a total of 120 occasions, and it is Spurs who have the superior number of 61 wins compared with 38 for the Foxes so far, as of the time of writing. There have been a total of 21 draws between these two teams to date.
The first ever competitive fixture between Tottenham and Leicester was in an FA Cup tie all the way back on 10th January 1914 in what was a 5 – 5 draw. William Minter, Herbert Middlemiss, James Cantrell, and Bert Bliss (x2) were all the goal scorers for Spurs that day, whilst it was Samuel Currie, Francis Mortimer, and Claude Stoodley (x3) all found the back of the net for the Foxes.
This was a first round tie, and it was to be Tottenham who got through to the next round after beating Leicester 2 – 0 in the replay at White Hart Lane, where Bert Bliss and Fanny Walden were both scorers for Spurs that day.
