Ivan Toney to join Spurs?

Ivan Toney

The England international has been linked heavily with a move to Tottenham this summer to become part of Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Spurs look set to continue to be active in the 2024 Summer Transfer Window, and there could be signings ahead of the North London outfit’s first game of the 2024/25 Premier League season against newly promoted Leicester City away at the King Power Stadium on Monday 19th August 2024.

As of the time of writing, Tottenham Hotspur Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has added several players to his squad as the Lilywhites look set to challenge for a place in the UEFA Champions League next season with a top four finish or by winning the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Final.

They have signed Timo Werner on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season, whilst also securing permanent deals for the likes of Archie Gray (£30 million, From Leeds United), Lucas Bergvall (£8.5 million, From Djurgardens), and Min-hyeok Yang (£3.5 million, From Gangwon FC). Yang has gone straight back to Gangwon FC on loan before joining up with the Lilywhites squad in January 2025.

One of the biggest names to be linked with a move to Spurs this summer is Brentford striker and England International Ivan Toney. Toney is a prolific forward, and in his Premier League career to date, he has made 141 appearances, scoring no less than 72 goals in the English Top Flight for the Bees, whilst also getting 23 assists to boot.

With only 12 months remaining on his contract, the rumoured fee to take him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London stands at a reported £50 million. The deal is complicated by the injury to new Brentford signing, forward Igor Thiago, but Toney’s move to Spurs is still in the realm of possibility.

Ivan Toney began his career with hometown club Northampton Town, joining the Cobblers’ academy before making his first team debut in a 3 – 3 FA Cup draw away from home against Bradford City as a substitute on 13th November 2012. He came on at the age of just 16, becoming the youngest ever debutant in the entire history of the club.

He then followed up his senior club debut with 4 goals in an emphatic 5 – 0 FA Youth Cup win against York City a day later.

Toney had to wait until 28th September 2013 for his first senior start for any club, featuring from the start in a 0 – 0 draw against Morecambe.

It was almost a year later when the forward would score his first senior goals, scoring twice in a comfortable 3 – 0 win in an EFL League Two fixture against Dagenham & Redbridge away from home on 26th April 2014. He also saved the club from relegation to the 5th tier of English Football thanks to an all-important header goal in a 3 – 1 win against Oxford United in what was the final game of the 2013/14 season.

It was in the 2014/15 season when the forward became a regular feature in the first team at Northampton, scoring a total of 8 goals whilst also getting 4 assists in 40 appearances in the English Fourth Tier. This form earned him a move to Premier League club Newcastle United ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

Toney spent the 2015/16 season on loan with Barnsley of League One, making 21 appearances, scoring twice in all competitions. He then had a loan spell with fellow third tier side Shrewsbury Town, scoring 6 goals and getting 3 assists in 19 league matches.

Loan spells at Scunthorpe United and Wigan Athletic followed between 2016 and 2018, scoring a total of 21 goals in total for both clubs.

Ivan then left Newcastle on a permanent basis for Peterborough United ahead of the 2018/19 season. With Posh, he scored a grand total of 16 goals whilst getting 7 assists to boot in League One in what was his debut campaign in 2018/19.

He then followed this up in his second and final season with Peterborough in the 2019/20 season, where he was able to score no less than 24 goals in 32 third tier matches whilst also getting 6 assists for his team. This totalled 30 goal involvements.

His current club Brentford then came calling, with the Bees signing the striker for a rumoured fee of £5 million ahead of the 2020/21 EFL Championship season after Toney’s stellar form in the previous two campaigns.

Toney remained prolific in the second tier of English Football, scoring 31 goals whilst getting 10 assists to boot in 45 Championship matches in all. His goals helped his team to a first ever promotion to the Premier League via the Promotion Play-Offs.

The forward made the transition to the Premier League look easy, scoring 12 goals and getting 5 assists in 33 matches in the top tier to help the Bees finish in 13th place with a total of 46 points to their name.

The 2022/23 campaign saw Toney become even more prolific in the Premier League, scoring 20 times, whilst also getting 4 assists to help his side to a very creditable and solid 9th place finish with a total of 59 points overall.

However, he did miss much of last season, 2023/24, due to a ban. He returned late on in the season, going on to score 4 goals, whilst getting 2 assists to boot in 17 appearances.

Ivan Toney has been capped 6 times by the Senior England National Team, and he did successfully score one of the penalties in the Three Lions’ 5 – 3 victory in the Quarter Finals of the UEFA EURO 2024 against Switzerland.

It will be intriguing to see where Ivan Toney ends up this summer, whether he stays at Brentford, or instead signs for Spurs where he could replace Richarlison, with rumours that the Brazilian may be moving to play in Saudi Arabia’s Saudi Pro League.

Spurs fans are excited for any further potential additions to their squad, as Spurs look to seal a return to the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League come the end of the 2024/25 season.
