Harry Kane majestic in a 3-2 victory over Man City

Saturday night provided a sensational game of football for Spurs fans, as well as neutrals, up and down the country. Harry Kane put in one of his greatest individual performances in a Tottenham shirt as he led his team to victory over table-toppers Manchester City. A victory that has weakened City’s position in the title race and reignited Spurs’ challenge for CL qualification.

Before the game kicked off at the Etihad, Tottenham were on a losing streak of three games in a row. However, Spurs stuck to a strategy and punished Man City on the counter-attack on multiple occasions. Cuti Romero was a titan at the back. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg a menace in midfield. Kane a magician upfront. Spurs are now 7 points behind Man Utd in 4th with 3 games and 9 points to play for.

Harry Kane was on fire for Spurs

Dejan Kulusevski was given his first full debut in a surprise Conte team selection. The new January signing had sparked interest in his previous fleeting appearances and he found himself on the scoresheet in the first five minutes. Harry Kane delivered an unbelievable left-foot pass to Heung-Min Son which split the City high line down the middle. Son then slipped the ball into Kulusevski for a tap in!

City equalised after a period of sustained pressure, especially down the left hand side. If Kane was the stand-out player for Tottenham, Joao Cancelo was certainly the stand-out for Man City. Sterling unleashed a cross into the box. After his mistakes against Wolves last week, Hugo Lloris spilled the ball. Gundogan punished him for it.

The second half whistle blew and Harry Kane upped his game to another level. Pass after pass pinpoint, until he followed up one of his passes after Son and Sessegnon had exchanged the ball giving Kane the time to get up the pitch. Kane slotted his effort beyond Ederson with aplomb. Spurs 2-1. Kane had the ball in the net once more but VAR came to the home team’s rescue.

Spurs victory seemed out of reach after Cuti Romero inadvertently committed a handball offence to award Man City a penalty. Such a shame after a stellar performance at the back alongside Eric Dier. Riyad Mahrez’s penalty was exemplary. Textbook. Nobody was saving that.

Tottenham Hotspur, the recent kings of the last chance saloon showed determination and grit to ensure that they had the last laugh. 90+5 mins in and the impressive Kulusevski curled a beautiful cross into the path of Harry Kane who buried the ball past Ederson and sent Conte and his sideline team into pandemonium. A magical end to a magical night for Tottenham Hotspur.

The manager’s thoughts

After the match, Antonio Conte exclaimed that,

“We played a good game. We followed a plan. Manchester City would keep the possession for 65 to 70 minutes for the game so we needed to be good tactically. But even when defending our first thought should be to attack.

“We created chances and scored good goals against a fantastic team. This win will give us more confidence. It wasn’t simple to play Manchester City after three losses in a row.”

What’s next for Tottenham Hotspur?

Tottenham will be high on confidence as they travel to Turf Moor to play Burnley on Wednesday night, 19:30 kick-off. After that, they play Leeds away at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon.
