Spurs vs Burnley Previous Fixture
Spurs 2 – 1 Burnley (Saturday 11th May 2024)
Spurs last took on Burnley in the Premier League back on Saturday 11th May 2024 when they came face to face at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the heart of North London. It was at the tail end of the 2023/24 season, and Tottenham were looking for all three points as they looked to secure a top four finish and UEFA Champions League football for the following season.
Ahead of this game against the Clarets, Tottenham was sat in 5th place with a total of no less than 60 points and they had been tasked with finding a way to close the seven point gap between themselves and Aston Villa in fourth place, and this was a game in hand on the Villans so it was still possible for them to close this gap. Victory would see them gain momentum going into the final games of the season.
Just before this game against Burnley, Spurs had been defeated 4 – 2 by Liverpool at Anfield. The goals for the away side came from the likes of Richarlison (72’) and Son Heung-Min (77’), whilst it was Mohamed Salah (16’), Andy Robertson (45’), Cody Gakpo (50’), and Harvey Elliott (59’) who were able to score all of the four goals for the Reds on that day.
As for Burnley, they were coming into this game off the back of a heavy 4 – 1 defeat at the hands of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at Turf Moor in Lancashire. The visiting Magpies went four goals up thanks to efforts from the likes of Callum Wilson (19’), Sean Longstaff (35’), Bruno Guimaraes (40’), and Alexander Isak (55’), whilst it was Dara O’Shea who scored what was only a consolation goal for the hosts in the dying embers of the game in the second half (86’).
Ahead of this game getting underway, Burnley found themselves deep in relegation trouble down in 19th place on 24 points with a 5 point gap between themselves and safety with only two games left to play before the end of the season. They knew that time was running out for them to avoid the drop, and only a win would do for them against Tottenham Hotspur.
In the end, it was Spurs who came out on top as deserved 2 – 1 winners against Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what was their final home game of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
The opening chance of the game came the way of Tottenham, and it came through their attacking midfielder James Maddison whose right footed shot was blocked well by the Burnley defenders to prevent their hosts from taking the lead within the first five minutes of the game in the first half (4’).
Burnley then had their first opportunity of the game just a moment later when Vitinho saw his header find its target, only for Spurs ‘keeper Guglielmo Vicario to make a superb save to deny the Brazilian from close range after meeting a ball into the box from Wilson Odobert (5’).
Brennan Johnson then forced a great save from Burnley stopper Arjanet Muric with an effort that looked like it would find the bottom right corner after the Welshman had met a cross into the box from his fellow forward Dejan Kulusevski (7’).
Then, after two missed efforts from Son Heung-Min (22’, 24’), the relegation threatened visitors Burnley scored to take the lead through their Danish forward Jacob Brunn Larsen at the midway point of the first half (25’).
It did not take long for the hosts to find the equalising goal, with Tottenham restoring parity by drawing level at 1 – 1 thanks to a goal from their right back Pedro Porro, who found the bottom right corner of the net after having received the ball into his feet from forward Brennan Johnson (32’).
The half time whistle went soon after with the score still level at 1 – 1 between hosts Tottenham Hotspur and the visitors Burnley.
After several efforts on goal throughout the second half from the likes of Son Heung-Min (51’), James Maddison (54’, 59’), Pedro Porro (54’, 72’), Micky van de Ven (62’), Cristian Romero (66’), Dejan Kulusevski (68’), Brennan Johnson (78’), and Pape Matar Sarr (80’), Spurs finally took the lead.
It was an effort from the aforementioned Micky van de Ven which gave hosts Spurs the advantage once again, making it 2 – 1 to the Lilywhites with less than ten minutes to go after the Dutch defender had managed to find the bottom right corner of the Clarets’ net with a left footed shot after having received a pass into his feet from James Maddison (82’).
Uruguayan central midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur then almost made it 3 – 1 just a few moments later, only for his effort on goal to be blocked well by the Burnley defence (85’). Cristian Romero then forced Muric into a great save just a minute later to keep the scoreline at 2 – 1 to Tottenham Hotspur (86’).
The full time whistle then went soon after, and it confirmed what was a well deserved and crucial 2 -1 victory for Spurs against Burnley. This result saw Spurs remain in fifth place, but the gap to Aston Villa in fourth place had been narrowed to four points with just two games left to play for the 2023/24 Premier League season. As for the Clarets, their relegation to the Championship was confirmed with this defeat in North London.
It was the hosts Tottenham Hotspur who indeed had the most possession with 63.1% of the ball compared with Burnley’s total of just 36.9% possession of the ball throughout the ninety minutes plus stoppage time. Spurs also had the most shots on target with 9 compared with the Clarets’ 3 in all.
