Ederson to Spurs?
The Brazilian midfielder currently plays his club football for Italian Serie A club Atalanta, and he has been linked with a January transfer to Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham.
Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur still look active in the latter stages of the 2024 January transfer window. Spurs have been credited with an interest in several players, which includes Atalanta’s Brazilian midfielder Ederson.
Reports from TeamTalk (via Calciomercato and Corriere Di Bergamo) link the midfielder with a move to North London, with the Brazilian in tremendous form for La Dea (The Goddess) so far in the 2023/24 season. According to Transfermarkt, he has a market value of €27 million (£23 million).
As of the time of writing, Ederson has made 27 appearances in all competitions for Atalanta, scoring 6 goals whilst also collecting an assist to boot. This assist and 5 of his goals have come in the Italian Serie A, where his input and general performances have helped his current club to 5th spot with 33 points after 20 matches.
As we mentioned earlier, Ederson predominantly plays as a central midfielder (96 appearances), but he has also been known to play as a defensive midfielder (45 appearances), an attacking midfielder (20 appearances), a centre back (2 appearances), a right midfielder (2 appearances), a left midfielder (1 appearance), a left back (1 appearance) and as a right back (1 appearance).
The 24-year-old may not have made a senior appearance for the Brazilian senior team, his form may change this over the course of the next few months. He has, though, got a cap for the Brazil Under 20s side.
Let’s now rewind back to the start of Ederson’s career, which was in youth football. He joined Desportivo Brasil aged 14 in 2013.
He made it to the first team, but was loaned out to Cruzeiro twice, once for the 2018 season and once for the 2019 season. After 5 appearances in his first loan spell, Ederson made 21 appearances in the Brazilian top flight, scoring 2 goals.
Corinthians was his next club, who he joined in February 2020. In his single season with the club, he made 25 appearances, scoring 3 times. A one season spell (2021) with Fortaleza then followed, which saw him make 24 appearances, scoring 2 goals and getting 1 assist.
Ederson finally made the move to European football in the 2021/22 season. He joined Italian club Salernitana on 30th January 2022. He would spend just a few months at the club, scoring 2 goals and getting 1 assist in 15 Serie A appearances.
His contributions and performances, in general, attracted the attention of Atalanta, who signed him on 6th July 2022. In the 2022/23 campaign, midfielder Ederson made 37 appearances, getting a goal and an assist. La Dea finished in 5th place after accumulating 64 points from their 38 matches – this saw them qualify for the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League.
As mentioned earlier on, Ederson has caught the eye with his performances for Atalanta in the 2023/24 season so far, with 6 goals and 7 assists in his 27 appearances in all competitions to date.
Spurs’ next game will see them take on Manchester City in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday 26th January 2024 in a 20:00 Kick-Off. There is then a home Premier League game against Thomas Frank’s Brentford on Wednesday, 31st January, in a 19:30 Kick-Off.
