Dele Alli & Spurs Confident of New Contract

Spurs are close to tying Dele Alli into a new contract, with The Independent reporting that there has been a ‘breakthrough in negotiations’ and both Alli and his team and the club ‘confident of a swift agreement.’

The versatile midfielder is currently under contract until well into the 2021/22 season but with fresh contracts signed for Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Heung-Min Son in the past six months, the team is eager to keep key players in North London. Dele Alli’s position in the club has gone from strength to strength since his initial deal was signed back in 2016, and although he was not linked with any clubs over the transfer period, Spurs will be keen to keep such a talented young player on the side.

Since joining from League Two side MK Dons back in 2015 and scoring his first goal just 2 weeks after his debut, he has become a key player on the squad. He was also named the PFA Young Player of Year in both of his opening campaigns for Spurs for his efforts.

Primarily a midfielder, Dele Alli has also found a role as a second striker as his style has developed, finding the net 38 times in his time at the club. He has also come to work well with forward Harry Kane, forming a playing partnership that he has called a ‘telepathy’ between the two players. This is something that was also seen at the 2018 World Cup, where Dele Alli scored against Sweden.

Dele Alli’s versatility has also been noted by manager Mauricio Pochettino who said of his skill that;

“In the box, he looks like a striker, and outside the box, he plays like a midfielder.

The revelation about contract discussions comes just a few days after Alli captained Spurs to victory in a third round match-up against Watford in the Carabao Cup at his old stomping grounds, Stadium MK. His debut in the captains armband, he cut a commanding figure despite joking afterwards that the armband was ‘too big’.

Dele Alli found the back of the net twice in the night, once with a penalty in the second half and again with the final shot of the penalty shootout that sent Spurs through to the next round. Pochettino later said he gave him the armband partly to give him the chance to wear it in the stadium that shaped him, but he was also impressed with his efforts, saying;

“Being a captain means a lot – it’s not just about wearing the armband…Dele spoke from the heart in his team-talk and I like that. I can’t tell you what he said but he was very good…He is more mature and has more experience. When you are young, you do some crazy things, but he has grown up. He is one of the best in England and one of the best in Europe in his position. I hope the experience of being captain for the first time will help him to improve even more.” (The Guardian)

With all that’s happened for him in the past few years, it’s often easy to forget that Dele Alli is still only 22. He is already widely regarded as one of the best young players in the Premier League, and if Spurs can secure him for the foreseeable future and continue to help him develop, the squad will benefit hugely.
