Match Preview: Chelsea vs Spurs
The international break is finally over and the hunt for the top four can resume. Chelsea and Spurs are both looking to cement themselves in those positions that qualify them for the Champions League.
Stamford Bridge remains to be an omen for the Lilywhites, as Tottenham Hotspur still have not won a game at the Bridge since the conception of the Premier League. Remarkably, the last time they defeated Chelsea on the road was back on the 10th February 1990.
Chelsea have fallen short recently in the ‘big game’ clashes, having recently lost to both Manchester City and Manchester United. However, Chelsea are the only side to have gone to Wembley this year win. As the season draws to a close, this match is vital for Chelsea who are 5 points off the top four as it stands.
Injuries and Team News
For Chelsea, keeper Thibaut Courtois and Andreas Christensen have been suffering from minor hamstring and fatigue injuries respectively, but both should make an appearance in this London derby.
Ross Barkley is still suffering with his hamstring and David Luiz has yet to fully recover from his ankle injury. Therefore, both of these players are unlikely to make an appearance on the weekend. Ethan Ampadu has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.
Tottenham Hotspur will be without their leading Englishman Harry Kane as he nurses the ligament in his ankle. The pinpoint date of the striker’s return has remained vague, but he will hopefully be ready for first team action again for the clash with Man City. As a result, we will probably see Lamela on the left with Heung-Min Son taking the reins up top. Winks is still injured and most likely will not appear. Toby Alderweireld did play the full 90 minutes for Belgium this week which indicates that he is back to full fitness.
There are five points and one place that separate Spurs from their London counterparts Chelsea. Chelsea are 5th with 56 points and will not one to drop a single point in fear of making that gap between them and the top four any wider. Chelsea have 8 games left to try and get themselves out of the predicament they find themselves in. Spurs are 4th with 61 points. They have a game in hand of Liverpool who are 3rd with 63 points. Manchester United similarly have a game in hand of Liverpool and are 2nd with 65 points. It is so close and so EXCITING.
