Match Report: Arsenal vs Spurs

Arsenal earnt the bragging rights in this North London derby as they comfortably beat Tottenham 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners came out hungry as they looked to press against Spurs high up the pitch from early on in the match. From the start, it was evident that the Spurs players weren’t as alert, being beaten to the ball by Arsenal, and seemed to have spent time waiting for a counter-attack. Lacazette had the first real effort of the game with a shot on the 19th-minute mark, but the Spurs defence seemed to weather the storm.

Arsenal vs Spurs: Formations

Eriksen managed to hit the post from 20 yards out in a rare attack in the first half, before conceding on the 36th-minute mark. The Spurs fans berated Mike Dean as he dubiously awarded a free kick to the Gunners down the left-side. Ozil, with a stunning ball into the centre, managed to find Mustafi, who connected beautifully with the ball to give his side the lead. The central defence struggled to manage the pace of Sanchez and Lacazette on a few occasions, and subsequently, became the core default of Spurs as Sanchez doubled the lead on 41 minutes. Lacazette demonstrated a quick burst of pace to beat Vertonghen and Dier, only to cut it back to Sanchez in the middle, who had time to take a touch before slotting home the second. Mike Dean again became the subject of controversy as Lacazette appeared offside as he ran in behind the Spurs defenders.

Tottenham had opportunities from Kane and Dier denied as the game pressed on, but chances were few and far between from Pochettino’s men. Harry Kane had a penalty claim as he was brought down by Granit Xhaka in the penalty box, again contributing to the growing discontent surrounding Mike Dean amid the Tottenham fans. Pochettino similarly seemed disgruntled with the standards of Dean, fervently repudiating Dean’s decision to allow the second goal in a post-match interview. The game finished 2-0 to Arsenal. The Gunners outplayed Tottenham on every level but nonetheless benefited from a few controversial decisions that swung their way.

Poch’s comments

“I’m very disappointed in the performance and the way we conceded the goals, he said. It’s difficult to explain when you lose in this way. Small details which are big details – that can change everything in football. Maybe Xhaka should have been sent-off before. The foul wasn’t a foul. The goal was offside. But we lose. We have to go home and keep going.”

Man of the Match

Mezut Ozil was electric for Arsenal and wins this game’s Man of the Match. He was active in the middle of the park and thread some delightful passes through to Sanchez and Lacazette which totally unravelled the Spurs back four.
