Arsenal v Spurs – Premier League Preview

Spurs end a week of massive fixtures with a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face fierce rivals Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday. Mauricio Pochettino’s side go into the tie full of confidence and are on an impressive run, having won their last six matches in all competitions after beating Inter Milan 1-0 at Wembley on Wednesday.

Arsenal are also in form and on an unbeaten run of eleven Premier League games, which will give Spurs even more incentive to defeat their rivals. The match on Sunday will be Unai Emery’s first taste of the North London Derby, which is the first to take place without Arsene Wenger since April 1996. Mauricio Pochettino, on the other hand, will be aiming to win for the first time at Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.

Arsenal v Spurs Team News

For Tottenham Hotspur, Erik Lamela will be assessed before the match after picking up a thigh injury midweek versus Inter Milan. With the hectic Christmas schedule approaching, Pochettino may not include him in the squad if it risks the Argentine being out for an even longer period.

Kieran Trippier is undergoing the final stages of rehabilitation after his groin injury but the Arsenal game will come too soon for him.
Elsewhere Davinson Sanchez, Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama are all unavailable for the Arsenal clash. Sanchez and Dembele are continuing their rehabilitation whereas Wanyama is out with a knee injury.

The good news for Spurs is that, after missing out against Inter Milan, Juan Foyth will return to the squad and could be in contention to start in his first North London derby.

Arsenal will monitor the fitness of French forward Alexander Lacazette, who missed out against Bournemouth last weekend and was not part of the squad that travelled to Kiev to play Vorskla Poltava in the Europa League on Thursday.

Having been left out of the team last week, there is uncertainty as to whether Mesut Ozil will start against Spurs on Sunday, whereas Nacho Monreal is still out with a hamstring injury. Unai Emery may revert back to a four man defence against Spurs, after switching to five versus Bournemouth last weekend, so that could free up a spot for Ozil to return to the team.

Arsenal v Spurs Predicted Lineup

Spurs Team Versus Arsenal

We are predicting that Mauricio Pochettino will go with a very similar team to the one that defeated Chelsea 3-1. The formation from that match may be tweaked, with Heung-Min Son moving to a wider role after starring through the middle against Chelsea.

Hugo Lloris will start in goal and captain Spurs whereas we think the same back four that kept a clean sheet against Inter Milan will play at Arsenal. Although Jan Vertonghen has just returned from injury, his experience and leadership will be vital in the North London derby and so Juan Foyth may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Serge Aurier will likely start his third game in a week on the right hand side of defence. We’ve gone for Ben Davies to start but because Danny Rose is back in action, Mauricio Pochettino may choose to start him ahead of Davies, as he typically likes to rotate his full backs.

In midfield, Eric Dier should return to the side after being rested against Inter Milan. The in-form Moussa Sissoko may continue in central midfield once again for Spurs, with Dele Alli in a more advanced role in front of him.

We think Heung-min Son will provide width for Spurs on the right hand side with Christian Eriksen appearing on the left hand side of midfield but drifting into central areas of the pitch.

Finally, Harry Kane will lead the line for Spurs. He was very impressive against Inter Milan and, as both Spurs and Arsenal fans are well aware, he has a habit of scoring against Spurs’ bitter rivals.

What Mauricio Pochettino Said

I think it will be tough the game, first of all. It will be an exciting game with two very good teams. We have to hope that in the end we can have a very good performance and can win the game. That’s our objective.

I think the mentality so far is so good. I think now it is about delivering the job. We have the belief which is most important in football. The belief and faith that you can beat any team away from home or at home and I think today the squad have that belief and that is the most important. Then the performance can be good or not so good. Then you have some luck or not in different games, but with the right mentality all is possible. (

On the improvement of Moussa Sissoko:

For me, we can not underestimate the platform that Tottenham offer for all players to improve. Not only him; Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli, Eric Dier or full-backs that became internationals like Danny Rose, Kyle Walker or Harry Kane.

In this case you ask about Moussa Sissoko, the platform Tottenham provide is a massive opportunity for all the players to improve, that is important to recognise and not underestimate that situation. In the last four and a half years how the players improve is amazing and massive and that is a big credit to the platform Tottenham provide for the players. (

Arsenal v Spurs One to Watch

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the player we’ve picked out for Arsenal. The former Borussia Dortmund man is currently the joint top goalscorer in the Premier League with eight goals and is one of the fastest players in the country. He has also scored with his last eight shots on target in the Premier League and so the Spurs defence will need to be at their best to keep him quiet. However, having kept Mauro Icardi quiet in the week, Mauricio Pochettino will know his side are capable of doing so.

Holding midfielder Lucas Torreira is also one to watch out for. He is small in size but is robust in the challenge and offers a tenacity to the Gunners’ midfield which they have lacked for many years.

Arsenal v Spurs Referee

Mike Dean will be the referee for the North London derby, with his appointment being met with mixed reactions from both Spurs and Arsenal fans. He has been in charge of two Spurs matches in the Premier League this season, both of which the Lilywhites have won (versus Wolves and Cardiff). He has yet to take charge of Arsenal in the Premier League but officiated in their Carabao Cup game against Brentford in September. With the North London derby always a feisty affair, he could be busy on Sunday.

Arsenal v Spurs Match Stats

  • Spurs have scored the most headed goals in the Premier League with eight, Arsenal have one.
  • Since September 2013, no Premier League player has more assists than Christian Eriksen (53). Mesut Ozil has 51.
  • Unai Emery was manager of PSG when Lucas Moura was there. The Spurs man has described it as “the worst seven months of my life”
  • Harry Kane is just one goal short of the record for most Premier League goals in north London derbies.
  • Arsenal have won just once in the last eight Premier League meetings between the two sides.

Arsenal v Spurs Predicted Score

Both sides are in good form, particularly in the Premier League, but in a derby form goes out of the window. That being said, Maurico Pochettino’s side have been excellent on the road and will be highly confident of getting a result after impressive victories over Chelsea and Inter Milan. It’s Unai Emery’s first North London derby and we think he might be in for a warm welcome from Spurs.

Our prediction is Arsenal 1-2 Spurs.
