Adam Wharton to Spurs?
The Blackburn midfielder has been linked with a move to North London in the January transfer window.
Tottenham’s push for a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League is set to continue in the second half of the 2023/24 Premier League season under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou. A top-four finish in the English top flight is very much possible, with the Lilywhites currently just one point adrift of Arsenal in 4th place.
As of the time of writing, Spurs have been linked with a plethora of players from across the continent. So far, they have completed one signing, which saw Timo Werner join the club on loan with an option to buy for the remainder of the campaign.
It also looks like Genoa’s Romanian central defender Radu Dragusin will follow the German forward to Tottenham in the 2024 January transfer window.
Reports from the last few days have linked another player with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The player in question is Blackburn Rovers’ 19-year-old midfielder Adam Wharton, who has been in outstanding form for Rovers in the Championship so far this season.
Wharton has stood out in a team languishing in 17th place in the second tier after accumulating 32 points from their 26 matches. They are 8 points adrift of the promotion play-off spots and 10 clear of the relegation zone.
So far, Wharton has been impressive defensively and has made 24 appearances. He has scored 1 goal and has 3 assists to his name so far.
We will now rewind to the start of Adam Wharton’s career. The English midfielder is a product of the Blackburn Rovers academy, and he joined the club’s youth set-up in 2010 at the age of just six.
Since joining the football club, he has impressed at each youth level and, after reaching the under-21s, is now a firm fixture in Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson’s starting eleven in the 2023/24 season.
It was in 2022 that Wharton signed his first-ever professional contract with the club, which came when he had only very recently turned 18.
Throughout his first full season in senior football (2022/23), Adam Wharton made 22 appearances in all competitions in Blackburn Rovers, with 18 of these coming in the Championship. In the second tier, the central midfielder contributed two goals and an assist, and his creative and defensive efforts helped his team to a 7th place finish after accumulating 69 points from their 46 matches.
Adam Wharton and Blackburn Rovers missed out on the promotion playoffs on goal difference, with Sunderland claiming the final spot in 6th place. Burnley and Sheffield United got automatically promoted, whilst Luton Town also got promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs after beating Coventry City in the final at Wembley Stadium.
He has carried his positive form into this season, and Spurs are said to be among the Premier League clubs that are interested in signing the teenage midfielder. According to a report by Football Insider (via OneFootball), the fee required to secure Adam Wharton’s services would be anywhere between £10 million to £15 million.
Attention turns away from the transfer market on Sunday 14th January, which sees them take on Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford in a 16:30 kick-off.
Then, Brentford will be the visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Spurs’ next home Premier League game on Wednesday, 31st January 2024, in a 19:30 kick-off.
Then, following a trip to Goodison Park to face Sean Dyche’s Everton at Goodison Park (3rd February, 12:30 kick-off), Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites will face a home league match against Brighton (10th February 2024, 15:00 Kick Off) before taking on Wolves the following weekend (17th February 2024, 15:00 kick-off).
